As I posted yesterday, I have been following the Primrose International Viola Competition being held at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles. I have heard some great playing from the participants so far! But they are not the only ones playing well. The accompanists playing for them have been spectacular! One pianist in particular has grabbed my attention every time he is on the bench. He is technically impeccable, musically engaging, and right with the soloist each step of the way. I would love to find out who he is, but...the PIVC makes no mention of the collaborative pianists anywhere on their website. Participants are listed, as are the jury members and guest artists complete with picture and bio, but the these lovely accompanists...nada! I call foul!!! These pianists are learning extremely difficult works (yesterday it was orchestral reductions of Walton, Bartok, Beamish, and Hindemith) and deserved to be acknowledged as much as anyone else in this competition. The musical world has grown a lot in it appreciation for good collaborative pianists, but this clearly shows that there is still work to do...
