I'm not planning on doing this professionally.
I hear this phrase from students and parents of students all the time. Of course, I realize that most of my students will no go on to be professionals. I don't want most of my students to become professionals! What bothers me about this phrase is that people use it as an excuse to give only 50% effort to their lessons. I expect all of my students to give their very best to their lessons because they have no idea what benefits they will get from their time in music training.
Meryl Streep is an excellent example of this! She has long been one of my favorite actresses, and I came across an article last week where she attributes much of her skills to the classical voice training she received earlier in life. (Speaking of Meryl Streep, I am going to see Into the Woods today, and I have been driving my wife crazy for weeks talking about it!!!)
This year, let me challenge you to fully throw yourself into the tasks in front of you. Learn as much as you can because you never known when and how you will use what you learn.
